Yes, I’m on Facebook, twitter, and some other social media sites. I even set up a private Ning family network for “my side of the family”. I’m not going to bore you with the impact of social media, but I do have to admit that I have been pleasantly surprised with how it has affected our business.
For as long as I remember, I had been ignoring various “invitations” to join some business network. I just didn’t see the value in allowing a program to download all of my contacts from Outlook and then invite them to do the same just for the sake of it. It seemed to be more of an arms race to see who could build the biggest network. That was until I really started to utilize LinkedIn.
For the past 4 months, I have tried to take stock in all things social media and see what could really have a positive impact on my business. I did not want to go through the motions and join every network and download every tool because everyone else was doing, but I wanted to see if there were some real gems out there.
On the surface, LinkedIn is a business card on steroids. You can display not only what you do, but what you have done, your twitter and blog feeds, your website, where you’re going next, who you know, some kind words from co-workers or clients, the list goes on and on. LinkedIn has proven to be nice surprise. Once you embrace it for what it is, a vast networking tool aimed at connecting like minded business professionals, you can really start to take advantage of its offerings.
The part I have grown to appreciate the most is the ability to join and form groups. My first group was my college alumni group, but once I found groups for Co-reg, Lead Gen, and all things online advertising, I soon discovered that significant business could be done within the walls of Linkedin.
I am always looking for new publishers and advertisers. After I posted “looking for sites that can host Canadian Co-reg offers”, I received dozens of legitimate responses. Of course, not all of these have panned out, but the realization that a simple discussion posting could generate that much real interest encouraged me to dive in even further. Since then, I stay on top of relevant groups, chime in on discussion groups, and reply with a private or public message depending on what’s appropriate.
I would love to hear your feedback on LinkedIn, what do you see as its pros and cons, has it helped your business too?
